With Napster, nobody had that choice anymore, one person buys the song and now everyone has a copy. Lars made it clear from the beginning that the money didn’t matter to him, it was entirely about bands having a choice about whether to have their music spread on the internet for free or not. I believe he was even mentioned in an episode of South Park too. Seriously, people actually thought that it should be okay to steal a band’s music without asking and spread it across the internet, wiping out all possibility of them getting paid for their songs? I realized after remembering this (admittedly hilarious) cartoon that people genuinely think Lars was being some greedy douche for trying to protect the rights of bands to sell their product the way they wanted to.
